- - - - Madame Loisel looking old was a consequences of her materialism . The use of the juxtaposition between the tenses is significant . this is seen in the past tense "looked" and the present tense "now" . This shows how her being materialistic is aged her from the beginning and her age is a reminder of her materialistic needs.
    - - Madame Loisel at the very beginning was described as "one of those" the use of these words makes her seem very generic nothing significant and not so unique but then when she is all dressed she is described as "prettiest" and this shows us why she is so desperate to look fancy and find materialistic things important.
        
        She is firstly represented as a "girl"
