What way do the characters respond to materialism? - Coggle Diagram

- - - - "her friend gave a cry" this shows how a materialistic person woould react to the appearance of one of her closer friends after she's been forced to do exhaustive house work for her necklace. "But...I'm sorry...I don't know...There's some mistake" the use of the ellipsis highlights the common reaction to the working class from upper classes who were materialistic.
        
        "But it was only an imitation necklace. It couldn't have been worth much more than five hundred francs!" The words "much more" indicate that five hundred francs was a very low amount to pay, however, in the text it is shown that Monsieur Loisel was saving four hundred francs for a gun and trips to go hunting with his friends. This shows how materialisitc Mada Forestier was.
        
        Conversely, the words "imitation necklace" could show that she preferred to use imitation jewellery which would give her a reputation even if she couldn't afford real diamonds. This shows how materialistic she was.
- - - - the fact that he told his wife to wear a posy highlights his view on things overall. he states that she can wear something simple. this highlights that he sees that people, with their attitudes, their personality and themselves can bring up, and make a piece of clothing beautiful, and it should never be the opposite. a posy is just flowers which are fairly cheap, which shows that it's not about the price of something, it's about its meaning and function- it makes you look pretty,
