BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLE - Coggle Diagram
BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLE
NITROGEN CYCLE
-
DEFINITION : A biogeochemical process which transforms the inert nitrogen present in the atmosphere to a more usable form for living organisms
NITROGEN FIXATION
1) Atmospheric nitrogen which is primarily available in an inert form is converted into usable form Ammonia (NH3)

CARBON CYCLE
WHAT IS CARBON CYCLE?
The process where carbon compounds are interchanged among the biosphere, geosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere of the earth
MAJOR STEPS
3) Plants and animals die, upon decomposing, carbon is released back into atmosphere

OCEANIC CARBON CYCLE
Marine animals convert carbon to calcium carbonate forming raw building materials require to create hard shells
When organisms with calcium carbonate die, their bodies decomposes, leaving their hard shells. that will accumulate on the seafloor and are eventually broken down by waves and compacted under pressure, forming limestone*
Ecologically, ocean takes more carbon than it gives out. (Called as "Carbon Sink")
When these limestone rocks are exposed to air, they get weathered and the carbon is released back into atmosphere as Carbon Dioxide
CARBON CYCLE ON LAND
Carbon enters the atmosphere through natural processes such as respiration and industrial application (eg: burning fossil fuels)
