Although there is an interpretation act and definitions for some acts, there are till cases where the definition is unclear
Use of broad terms
Example; Dangerous dog act 1991. "Any dog of the type known as the Pitbull terrier" What is meant by Type

Rules of Interpretion

Golden Rule
Adjusted Literal Rule
Takes the meaning of a word, but allows to change the meaning if the result is absurd

Literal Rule
Courts Give words that ordinary meaning, even if the result isn't sensible

Judges make presumptions at the beginning of the case, until statute can be applied, then the assumption is rebutted
