INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
INTERCULTURAL
● A discipline that studies communication across different cultures and social groups
● A communication process of how an organization is made up of individuals from different religions, race, social, ethic, educational background and so on.
● How different cultures affect the process of communication.
INTERCULTURAL RELATIONSHIPS
● The bond between people from different cultures or ethnicities.
● When two or more people from different backgrounds form a relationship together.
● How cultural elements such as language, norms, customs, values and artifacts interact with each other.
CULTURAL
● Culture is a generalization about how a group of people coordinate meaning and action among themselves.
● Through institutions such as religious, political, and economic systems, and family and other social structures.
● Habits are often referred to as cultural assumptions and values which is also what the individual accepts and takes it as a guideline of what is right and wrong.
COMMUNICATION
Simple transmission of information.
It is also known as the ‘Mutual Creation Of Meaning’.
It is a way of how the individual tries to send out their message, idea and information to others by using verbal or non verbal communication.
SOCIAL PENETRATION THEORY (SPT)
As relationships develop, interpersonal communication between two people deepens into a more intimate level.
Process of developing relationships with others and reaching a deeper level of intimacy with them.
OTHER INTERGROUP RELATIONS TERMS
● The term called “multicultural” is used to refer to multiple cultures represented in a group.
● It’s a group of people who has a lot of diversity in it. For example, the U.S workforce has been more diverse in heritage due to immigration, more variety in domestic ethnic groups, more gender, ages and representation by the minorities such as people with disabilities.
● because of the term “diversity” it can be referred in existence of cultural differences
● It is sometimes used more generally to indicate an issue that deals with prejudice, stereotyping, segregation, denial of equal rights.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE
● Intercultural Competence
● Sensitivity to cultural differences
● Being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value
● Positive or negative, better or worse, right or wrong
● In a way people should be more aware of the do’s and don'ts of other cultures.
● Tolerances to cultural differences
● Tolerance is the recognition of the universal human rights and freedom of others; it is giving acceptance of the differences of others without judgment.
● Tolerate cultural differences by acceptance without judging other’s culture.
UNCERTAINTY REDUCTION THEORY (URT)
● People need to reduce uncertainty about others by gaining more information.
● Uncertainty makes people unpleasant so in order to reduce uncertainty, interpersonal communication has to take place.
● Common in intercultural communication when people try to form new relationships with people from different cultures.

Pragmatic Competence
● The ability to use language effectively in a contextually appropriate fashion.
● Using their knowledge of the linguistic resources available in a given language for realizing particular illocutions.
Strategic Competence
● Ability of someone to use a language interactively conveying a meaning.
Linguistic Competence
● A system of linguistic knowledge possessed by native speakers of a language.
● It is the way a language system is used in communication.
