Autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases micro ch.18 lecture 5
Endocrine glands
Autoimmune response
Can develop against cells in the pancreas or thyroid gland
Can cause destruction of gland and hormone deficiencies.
Type I diabetes melitus
attack on islets of Langeerhan
loss of ability to make insulin
Some pt's have genetic predisposition to developing type I diabetes related with possession of certain class I MHC molecules.
Tx
Immunosuppressive drugs
Endocrine organs
Autoimmune response
lead to stimulation rather than destroying gland tissue
Graves disease
autoimmune response against thyroid gland.
Triggered by viral infection with genetic background
triggers production of thyroid hormone and growth of thyroid gland.
Tx
antithyroid medication or radioactive iodine
surgical removal sometimes required
Autoimmune diseases
2 groups
Systemic autoimmune disease
Single organ autoimmune disease
affect organs
Blood cells
people produce antibodies against RBC's
Speeds destruction of RBC
causes severe anemia
cause=unknown
Type II
endocrine glands
Nervous Tissue
Multiple sclerosis
type IV
deficits in vision, speech, and neuromuscular function
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Connective tissue
Immunodeficiency diseases
2 types
Primary immunodeficiency disease
Acquired immunodeficiency diseases
Chronic granulomatous disease
inability of their phagocytes to destroy bacteria
Severe combined immunodeficiency
Children don't make T-cells or B cells and can't mount immune responses
no resistance to any type of infection which can lead to rapid death
Digeorge Syndrome
T cell deficiencies alone
Thymus doesn't develop so no T cells
Die of viral infections while remaining resistant to most bacteria
Tx
Thymic stem cell transplant
bruton Type agammaglobulinemia
Lack B cells, lack immunoglobins
Inherited (mostly boys)
recurrent bacterial infection, usually resistant to viral, fungal, and protozoan infections
