Pre-assessment for 9th grade Poetry Unit
Purpose:
to assess what knowledge and skills the students already have with regard to poetry analysis.
Pre-Assessment:
Students will read a poem and answer questions which check the student's 1. comprehension of the poem 2. knowledge of poetic devices 3. vocabulary level and 4. ability to analyze the poem and create a thesis statement
'Emerging' Students
23% of the class
3 students struggled with the language and 2 students have no prior understanding of the topic and must be considered for special ed
Special ed students must be continuously assessed to see if their curriculum needs modification
As the unit progresses, these students will be strategically placed in homogenous or heterogenous groups depending on the assignment or activity. The goal for these students is to meet the course and grade's power standards and gain the knowledge and skills to meet the basic goals of the unit.
As the summative assessment for the unit requires students to choose and analyze a poem of their choice, these students will be encouraged to check their poem with the teacher first to make sure they are choosing a poem that is acceptable for their level.
Exit tickets will be used at the end of EACH class to assess what the students are learning and beginning to understand and what they are still not grasping
Students will have the opportunity for some assignments to choose their own poems - this gives them to the opportunity to choose poems that they feel more confident analyzing.
'Meeting' Students
55% of the class
These students are at the expected or 'average' level for knowledge/skills and understanding of poetry at this point in the unit.
Formative assessments in the form of poetry annotations, mini quizzes that check their understanding of poetic devices, and nearpod lessons will be used to monitor their understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to perform well on the summative assessment.
For the summative assessment, students should check with the teacher to make sure they are choosing a poem and topic that is suitable for their level.
'Exceeding' Students
23% of the class
These students have knowledge and skills the exceed the expectation for their achievement levels prior to entering the course/unit.
To be able to challenge these students, there will be opportunities built into each assignment/activity/assessment which allow them to do more than is expected of the other students.
For the summative assessment, these students will be expected to check their poem of choice with the teacher to make sure that they are being challenged by their poem choice and not choosing a topic that is 'too easy' for their level.
