Astronauts need a safe way to land on a new planet to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
This method uses parachutes and inflatable crash pads to cushion the landing of the shuttle. The parachute would deploy once the shuttle gets close to the planet, slowing the shuttle down. Then the crash pads would deploy to cushion the landing of the rocket.
Pros
This method decreases the chances of the shuttle taking damage as landing.
This method doesn't need to use fuel once you enter the planet's atmosphere.
This method requires less preparation for the landing.
Cons
You have little to no control of how you land using this method.
The system that deploys both the parachute and crash pads could fail and result in the destruction of the shuttle and everyone inside of it.
You could end up landing and still rolling or tumbling. You can only hope you land well using this method.
The shuttle would land vertically instead of on a runway.
Pros
This method is more cost effective since you only would need a few robots to find a small landing area. (cost effective for the robots only)
The risk of debris re gathering in the landing zone decreases.
The time it would to find a landing zone would be much shorter than other methods.
Cons
The landing has to be perfect otherwise the shuttle will completely be destroyed and or exploding.
The weather conditions must be near perfect for this landing to prevent any winds from pushing the shuttle over.
Landing the shuttle would require more fuel.
Sending many rovers to scout the area on whatever planet you are trying to land on. These rovers would then search the planet for a portion of land that is similar to a runway for the plane to land. These rovers would also start clearing out any debris in the way.
Pros
Almost ensures the safety of the landing
Pilots are used to landing this way and should feel familiar
No risk in human lives being hurt, since you're sending robots instead of humans.
Cons
This method isn't very cost effective
Debris may start forming while the shuttle is attempting to land and block the runway.
The rovers may not be able to find a piece of land that imitates a runway and or not be able to clear the land from any debris.
