Atomic Physics
Speed of EMR
The speed of EMR is the same as the speed of light. This is because all EMRs are light at different frequencies and wavelengths therefor they have the same speed being 3x10^8

Photoelectric effect
An emission of electrons when EMR such as light hits a material. Electrons emitted in this way are called photoelectrons. For an electron to be released there must be a certain wavelength and frequency. This is called threshold frequency. This depends on the work function for the material.

Charge:Mass ratio
JJ Thomson conducted an experiment where he discovered a new subatomic particle which is the electron. This has many applications in science but a big use is the Charge-to-mass ratio. Scientists could not precisely measure charges with a particale's mass.
-
Compton effect
A photon can be a particle with a momentum and energy which means that waves can also be known as particles because they have momentum. Compton discovered this and made the equation p=hf/c or p=h/λ. He created an experiment which used electrons to scatter photons, he noticed that energy was being lost and momentum as well which showed that waves can act similar to particles.

Energy Levels
Excitation state is when an electron becomes excited when they have a sudden increase in energy. Because of this it allows the electron to jump to a different energy level. An electron can become excited in 2 ways, the first being an electron colliding with a high energy electron, this although only gets it off the ground state, the second way is for an electron to absorb a photon that exactly matches the excitation state energies.

de Brogile hypothesis
de Broglie’s hypothesis on wave particle duality stemmed from his curiosity that if waves can be particles, why can’t particles be waves as well. He derived a formula to support his hypothesis which was λ=h/mv, he then figured out that electrons travel in a wave like way. This confirmed his hypothesis and had a great impact on the understanding of waves and particles.

Quantum mechanical model
Erwin Schrödinger proposed the quantum mechanical model of the atom, which treats electrons as matter waves, this could be accepted because of de Broglie’s contribution to science.

Line Absorption
Spectrum of EMR transmitted through a substance, showing dark lines or bands due to absorption of specific wavelengths
