Elements of an Effective Online Class
STRUCTURE
-
Ensure that your evidence of learning and assessment strategies are adequately varied (have students demonstrate their learning in more than one or two ways).
Be consistent and organized. Use the same font, size, and colors throughout the course.
-
Have the appropriate amount of content for students. (enough to learn but not so much that they become overwhelmed)
-
Ensure that course content is delivered in an order that makes sense, building on course content as needed
Students should have a clear understanding of what is to be done each week and when it is to be done by.
Use technology that students are familiar with to begin. Do not overwhelm students with too many new things at once.
Have a brief video overview of intstructor going through the assignments for the week, this gives a chance for students to see and hear their teacher and helps those who learn best by hearing instructions.
Active Instructor Pressence:
Personalization: HUMOR, KINDNESS, CARE, EMPATHY
-
-
Share little parts of your personal life (how your week is going ect). And inquire about students lives to show you care.
“Humor online must, necessarily, be more crafted than the spontaneous, improvisational mode of traditional classrooms. It can only be strengthened through practice and application. Starting small in the incorporation of humorous content and slowly adding more to the course platform is a valid method of increasing student engagement and instructor confidence in humor usage." (Smith & Wortley, 2017).
"Research shows that an active presence by the online instructor has a positive impact on student satisfaction, student sense of connectedness, and student learning.
-
Have a centralized section on the course webpage that is updated regularly with things due in the course or when assignments are added.
Active online instructors teach with equity in mind. They are aware of students' backgrounds and socioeconomic circumstances, and make arrangements to support students based on their needs.
The 7 Elements of a Good Online Course.
Showing off animals or kids when they just so happen to butt in during class, allow the students to knowlege when something funny happens.
Try and incorporate fun breaks. For example, a "scavenger hunt" where you give students something they have to try and find around their house (i.e. a brush) and first one back to their screen showing the object wins.
CLEAR COMMUNICATION
Course content and tasks flow naturally and everything that the learners need to know is there and communicated clearly.
-
Student Assessment is clear
Students should have access to rubrics, course outlines, and other resources that clearly identify their responsibilities and how they are being assessed.
-
Communication skills must be strong as live, face-to-face feedback is not part of online classes, thus the teacher must build solid skills to communicate with students to ensure learning is occuring
Ensuring that you set aside clear times that you are able to respond quickly to questions, and communicating those times to your student, as well as the best ways to reach you.
Use learner-friendly language to communicate key ideas to students. Choose clear language that students will instantly recognize and understand to create as little confusion as possible. (Example: use language you know your ENTIRE class will understand: think of your ELL kiddos)
Invest in a good quaily microphone and camera, that way you are coming off as clear as you can be when in a online medium like Zoom, Discord, Teams, or Google Meet.
Community Building
Create a safe place for students to share things that they are doing, jokes, memes, etc. thats not educational based but still facilitated by you.
Check in with students and ask if there are certain aspects of the course that they enjoy or if they have different preferences that could be applied to improve the delivery of the course. Teaching becomes more effective when teachers listen to the needs of their students.
-
-
Offer virtual meeting check-ins for the whole class to give students the opportunity to ask questions and connect with each other
Allowing students to have their own avatar or backstory for a specific class, give them quests and XP for doign various tasks and allowing that XP to be used for different rewards.
