Type 2 and 3 Ch.18 lecture 3
Results when cells are destroyed by immune response
2 examples
Destruction of blood cells incomplete blood transfusion
Destruction of fetal RBC's
ABO system and transfusion reactions
every person has A and B antigens, both, or neither
Transfusion reaction
results when person recieves diff. blood type. Donors blood group antigens stimulate production of antibodies in recipient, destroying transfused cell
ABO development
if recipient has preexisting antibodies to foreign blood group antigens
If recipient has no preexisting antibodies to foreign blood group antigens
Type III
hypersensitivity can affect lungs causing pneumonia, kidneys, lupus, and RA
sensitization happens when antigens inhaled into lungs stimulating antibodies
localized reaction
farmers lung
pigeons breeders, lung dust from feces
libranian lung dust from old books
Glomerulonephritis
occurs when immune complexes circulating blood are deposited in wall of glomeruli
could lead to kidney failure
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Immune system attacks its own body's antigens
tissues swell, thicken and proliferate joint causing pain, joint breaks down becoming distorted and fuse ROM is lost.
Tx
anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressive drugs
