        The company (only officers) are having a feast
        
        This is happening late evening/night
        
        Officers, but more prominently Stanhope, were indulging in the feast served, seemingly forgetting that they had lost Osborne and some soldiers in the raid earlier that day
        
        Stanhope asks Mason to bring him another bottle of whiskey but unfortunately, there's none left
        
        (Tea seems to be a common substute)
        
        When Trotter mentions the raid, Stanhope gets quite upset that he has been reminded of something so tragic when his spirits are high (for once).
        
        Stanhope,"Well-shut up...we were having a jolly nice evening...". Uses past tense, + jolly-nice
        
        Stanhope envies Trotter's carefree personality
        
        "Nothing upsets you" > or makes him particularly happy
        
        Raleigh comes down the steps and Stanhope asks of his whereabouts when he was told to attend the dinner.
        
        Raleigh felt guilt indulging in great food while (for all he knew) Osborne may still be alive OR that he didn't deserve to indulge himself
        
        Stanhope made sure that Raleighs food had been prepared for him
        
        Stanhope shames Raleigh for not attending

        Stanhope lays huddled in a blanket.

        There is a sense of coldness in this scene. (No more joy but only a harsh coldness)
        
        (+Trotter, Mason,) SM tells Stanhope about how there may still be a potential attack "in a while"
        
        Instead of checking his watch he doesn't really care about the specifics anymore (if you put in 100% of your effort and receive less in return the same thing will happen if you pay less attention)
        
        Suddenly, a private soldier reports an attack and that Corporal Ross had been injured
        
        He soon finds out the Raleigh has been badly injured by a fragment of a grenade
        
        Stanhope rushes to see Raleigh (rather bring him down into the Dug-out)

        When he finds out there is a sense of urgency in his voice as he starts shouting ,

      - SCENE I
        
        Colonel checks up on Stanhope to ensure that the preparation for the raid are going smoothly
        
        It's the next day
        
        Stanhope is incredibly nervous and is pacing around the room looking at his watch every few seconds
        
        Is attributed from his perfectionist-leader type personality
        
        "He looks anxiously at his watch"
        
        "He wanders relentlessly to and fro"> wanders/fro being zoom words
        
        It turns out that his watch is 30 minutes behind.
        
        Before going out on the raid Osborne takes off his ring a letter and his watch and places it on the table.
        
        Osborne and Raleigh are sent up (here stage directions are used to SHOW whats happening > "environmental story telling")

        The smell of bacon being served it so pungent that it lingers for a bit.

        Raleigh is still upset over what transpired last night.
        
        Instead of responding w/ a joyful tone he answers "with his head down, "yes.""
        
        Osborne notices that Raleigh is upset.
        
        Osborne engages in a light-hearted conversion with Raleigh about cricket and more prominantly, rugby
        
        This shows Osborne's compassionate character
        
        This shows Raleigh's more sensitive, immature character
        
        Raleigh is now in a better mood, Stanhope commands him to check on the platoon rifles. Mason, Osbrone and Stanhope continue having breakfest
        
        Stanhope informs Osborne about the plan to strengthen the line of wire,
        
        The colonel has been talking to Stanhope about an attack. (Intel froma German soldier) set to be on Thursday, (current day= Tuesday)
        
        Topic soon gets dreary, so there is a topic switch

        They then talk about how they started digging out trenches> living conditions
        
        Stanhope: "so stiff it cant move"
        
        Raleigh's letter gets read by Osborne to Stanhope

        It is now afternoon, same day.
        
        S-M is introduced.
        
        he was "groping the steps" implying be is heavier built
        "huge man, with a heavy black moustache, a red face and a massive chin"
        
        Stanhope is quite hospital to S-M and insists he has a drink (whiskey)>> S-M is reluctant but complies eventually
        
        S-M notifies Stanhope that they could retreat during the attack on Thursday
        
        Stanhope: "we stick here even when other companies have given way."
        
        Goes onto say that they'll win the whole war on their own if they had to
        
        (Osborne and the colonel enter the scene. )
        
        Colonel: notices that the bacon's smell had stuck to the walls. "Strong smell of bacon"
        
        Colonel is introduced
        
        The colonel informs Stanhope that multiple sources have confirmed that the attack will be held on Thursday morning.
        
        Brigadier is informed the colonel> Stanhope
        
        German forces are going to make a "hard push" forth.
        
        Stanhope replies with "naturally". Being calm and collected and not really phased by such a daunting feat to overcome
        
        The colonel informs Stanhope to host a raid "tomorrow afternoon"> in broad daylight
        
        The colonel then suggests sending 10 soldiers and 2 officers

      - It's very dark, moonlight barely comes through openings of trenches. Main source of lighting=candlelight
