KEY MOMENTS

engagement party

Francis comes in and says Roscoe isn't dead. This causes a lot of confusion for the actors on stage because they all believe he is dead and now Alan can't marry her

Lighting
-
-
Is the lighting used in a way to tell us any further information around the play? Time of Day, Time within the seasonal year, mood and atmosphere?
during the scene where stanley and rachel are going to kill themselves. The lighting is darker as the tone of the play became darker. However, straight after the lighting is back to a warm light with a yellow undertone.
Quite natural lighting at the start of the play (the engagement party) with the large window at the back of the stage showing that it is dark outside. The lighting is a tad dimmer than it would be in the day time to show that it's the evening
During the dinner with the two guvnors, the lighting is brighter and more intense to show the intensity of the situation that Francis is in to stop the two guvnors from meeting.
It also draws our attention a lot more because we have this sense of tension that something is going to go wrong throughout the scene.
When Francis beings an audience member onto the stage or goes to talk to the audience the house lighting comes on. This shows to us that the focus is now on the audience members rather than the actors on the stage. It also creates a sense of intensity and wakes the audience up so they are ready for the performance to carry on.
They wanted to reflect the bight, entertaining and funny environment brought to the stage by characters through the lighting. The lights were warm and welcoming, and they showed the costumes beautifully
Acting
JAMES CORDEN
Moves around the stage a lot and shows his confusion by pacing a lot. He was also very quick paced during the dinner with the two guvnors to show that he was under a lot of pressure and that it was quite an intense situation.
Uses a range of vocal techniques that allow us to hear a clear difference from when he is confused and when he isnt due to him working for two different people which was never normally allowed.
He would always have his head down when he nearly told one guvnor about the other. This showed to the audience that he was quite shameful about it and that he knew it was wrong.

Style
Acting: They act to fit the style of Commedia dell'arte which is done by improvised theatre. It doesn't start with language and text but with body. The essesence of the character doesn't exactly come from language but physical movement

Set Design
Can you describe the set, what materials have they used and why?
The pantomime-like style could link to them wanting to make sure the audience experienced the play and understood it all. making the set simplistic and easy to interpret ensures the audience understand the setting and therefore don’t get confused by what’s happening on stage
They used painted wooden panels to create fake houses and buildings that they could go in and out of , it was like what they use in pantomimes
very minimalistic. In the Renaissance, the building of new theatres came from rich scholars attempts to rediscover the classical theatre. Some theatres were built in the homes of the lesser gentry such an local inns (specific for Commedias dell'arte). Most developments came from the Opera

Costume
-
-
Each character is different and defined by their masks and costumes. Their costumes show both their social status and background. For example, Pantalone is usually in red bottoms, a matching skirt, a long black cape, red or black pointed shoes and a belt with a purse attached. Dottore was dressed almost entirely in black. The contrast between the bright red and the black shows a lot about their characters: Pantalone wants to be seen whereas Dottore is in the background and is more closed off as a person.

Research
started in the 1600s Renaissance period, first time women were on stage, mixture of upper class theatre and lower class theatre so everyone wanted to watch it and it was very popular from the 16th century to the 18th century, lots of improvisation.
