What happened next?
After Charles was executed in 1649, England became a Republic for 11 years (a country with no king or queen)
Parliament couldn't agree so MP Oliver Cromwell decided to take over and close parliament. He called himself the lord protector
He divided the country up into 11 districts, each run by a Major-General. These men were strict Puritans and introduced many new laws that changed life in England
What about Charles?
Once Parliament had won the war, King Charles was put on trial in January 1649.
“Charles Stuart, King of England…traitorously waged a war against Parliament and the people….He is therefore a tyrant, traitor and murderer and an enemy to the commonwealth of England”

The trial lasted 7 days and Charles was found guilty. Some judges refused to sign the death warrant.
