Chinese not used as much compared to English in normal casual conversations
What
one of the four official languages of Singapore along with English, Malay and Tamil.
It is considered to be the second most commonly spoken language in Singapore, after English.
However this does not branch out as truely when looking at current students
Our chinese identity dying out
The lack of use will cause the presence of the culture to slowly die out
Why
Causes
Youths and children these days speak English more often than Chinese.
Many are not interested in nurturing their mother tongue aka feel that it is boring.
Many youth are influenced by Western culture so they are more inclined to use english during their daily lives and when they are on the internet or in real life.
Other youth are more interested in Korean or Japanese culture.
They think the language is only used during class time.
They get bad marks for the subject thus, dragging them down.
Chinese media is not as widespread in Singapore
As they are already poor in the language many youths do not feel a sense of belonging learning their own language
When
History
became widely spoken by the Chinese community in Singapore after the Speak Mandarin Campaign in 1979.
After the May Fourth Movement in 1919, under the influence from the New Culture Movement in China, the local Old-style private Chinese school in Singapore began to follow the new education reform as advocated by China's reformist.
Before the 20th century, Old-style private Chinese school known as sīshú (私塾) in Singapore generally used Chinese dialects (such as Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, etc.) as their medium of instruction to teach the Chinese classics and Classical Chinese.
Now
Chinese not used as widely as in was in previous years
How
Influence of other cultures like Korean,Japanese and western
Their interest in the culture causes them to prioritise more on the other languages rather than Chinese, their own native cultural language
Singapore's education system prioritising grades
Students feel more motivated to drop Chinese Language subject due to the pressure of trying to obtain good grades as they feel it drags them down. This is especially true on those who dont score as well in the Subject
