By being informed, people can help to donate money to assist
Disadvantages of Social Network
It can be distracting.
Being on the phone can allow one to be disconnected from their surroundings.
For example, teenagers would be on their phones while crossing the roads and not notice a car coming their way. This shows that being on social networks could be distracting to one.
It can affect family relations.
For example at a family dinner, instead of the children telling their parents how their day went, they would be other phones messaging their friends or scrolling through social media platforms. Not only that, parents might be busy replying to emails regarding work. This could create a drift between the parent and the child and hence, affecting family relations
There will be an increase of teenagers getting clinical illness.
With social media, there would be a higher chance of getting cyberbullied. Victims would then be traumatised by the bullying they faced. This creates a bigger opening for them to fall into depression and anxiety etc.
It increases the risk of getting personal information leaked
With technology getting more advanced, social networks are more prone to get hacked. Hackers can easily hack into one person's account and attain their personal information. There might be a chance of them getting leaked online.
SOCIAL DILEMMA
THE SUMMARY:
Social Dilemma is a documentary that focuses on how big social media companies manipulate users by using algorithms that encourage addiction to their platforms.
It also shows, how platforms harvest personal data to target users with ads – and have so far gone largely unregulated.
It shows how our time and attention is monetized, how there is more profit in disinformation than in truth, and the ways in which democracy is being eroded.
THE GOOD AND BAD SIDE OF ALGORITHMS
1) Social Media companies use algorithms to encourage addiction.
WHY?
-It is understandable that social media companies have to find ways to get more users to their platforms.
Companies like: Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, their business model is to keep people engaged on screen.
So that they can earn money.
HOW?
-By finding things that interest you, and start to advertise it to get you addicted to it and stay on the app longer.
In other terms, the services we use on the interne are not free, they are paid for by advertisers. Our attention is the "product" that is being sold to the advertisers.
How are business companies so sure that if they place their ad on the social media platform, it will be successful?
It starts off with a collection of data. From there, they can determine what ad is suitable to be posted.
"It's the gradual, slight, imperceptible change in your own behavior and perception that is the product."
Jaron Lanier
BUT HERE IS THE PROBLEM!
When they have successfully get billions of users to be addicted, it is easy for them to be manipulated.
By default, social media algorithms take the reins of determining which content to deliver to you based on your behavior, based on what you want to see.
This is how manipulative and misleading online activity spread. It is alarming because users do not realize that the content they are seeing may not true. Social media sites leave users vulnerable to being misled and misinformed. By allowing trolls and bots to exploit their systems, to manipulate a users thinking. Overtime, it gets harder and harder to sieve out the truth from the lies.
Social Media algorithms:
It is a set of rules used to rank, filter and organize the content for users within certain social media platform. Its major role is to show users the content according to their preferences and previous activities on social media.
