The National Reading Panel focuses on phonic awareness, reading fluency, and phonics instruction.
When students struggle to read they avoid it altogether because it is no longer a simple task to complete.
The Science of Reading
Reading does not come naturally. It is a written code that has to learn be how to properly be decoded.
The brain is not hardwired to read, but it is hardwired to speak.
We store words in our mind and retrieve them when we need them and this is how we identify between different words.

Balance literacy is a type of whole language with bits of phonics mixed in. Students get a little bit of everything all at once.

The American language is mix or meltpot type of language that comes from other cultures like the dutch, french, anglo saxon. That is why there are mulitple spelling rules.

Students with Dyslexia have the potential to have strong reading skills if they are taught properly.
Teachers should speak up about the knowledge that they don't have. This could be due to a lak of resources or training.
