An aspect of my teaching that I am interested in making more effective is my knowledge of techniques to ensure the engagement and progress of children with English as an additional language and how assessment can play a part in this.
Engagement and progress

2nd lang acqui
- age of learn impacts on 2nd language learning difficulties
- accessing prior learning acquired through the 1st language is important
- learners may acquire fluency in conversation English quite quickly (approx 2 years), takes much longer (7 years approx) to acquire level of proficiency in academic English required for learning and production within the school curriculum.
cognitive psychology
- that individuals have different learning styles
- about the strategies that learners use to process information for language learning.
- about communication strategies that learners use.

-
Pupils learning EAL share characteristics with pupils whose first lang is eng, many learning needs are similar.
H/W - these pupils have distinct and different needs because they are learning in and through another language and come from different backgrounds and communities with different understanding and expectations of education, language and learning.
-
Important that policy, planning and teaching decisions at all levels take account of the task for the learners
-
once EAL learners have basic communication competence, it is easy to assume understanding of English and engagement of learning is much greater than it actually is
Pupils with EAL are learning in a m.stream classroom where needs of all pupils need to be met- however, it is not always possible for teachers to take account of learning situations of pupils learning EAL - in the context of the mainstream classroom EAL learning tasks could easily be forgot.
-
General knowledge, statistics and data :
Many churn learn EAL, future achievement in ed will be determined by their success in learn Eng. - NALDIC (1999)
-
EAL needs to be more widely understood and recognised as a significant field of teach and learn to respond to the learn needs of more than 500000 EAL children in school populations.
EAL is about teach and learn lang through the content of the whole curriculum - take place within m.stream and within all subj. - and within the hidden curriculum.
'The conceptual model' - lang development, cognitive development and socio-cultural development.
"The process of learning a second or additional language is related to the pupil's cognitive, linguistic and socio-cultural development. These processed interact with a particular learning context, the classroom, which is in turn influenced by wider community and societal factors. At the heart of the process is the individual learners with his or her unique personality and individual intellectual and emotional strength. All of these factors influence the learning process."

What is normal development of EAL for young children who need to develop EAL as they start school or nursery
young children often go through a period which is silent, echo single words, develop formulaic language and begin to generate telegraphic speech
Tabors (1997) children may experience 'double bind' of nee, to be able to socialise with peers to learn target language but don't have the sufficient language to socialise successfully.
