Peru is bordered by : Ecuador , Colombia , Brazil and Bolivia
The light green area with in Peru is the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest.
The Peruvian Rain forest extends across 60% of Peru and is know for a great amount of biodiversity
The Peruvian rainforest is very important forest, it covers most of Peru and is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. this forest needs to be protected from deforestation and other threats to help it thrive.
The Peruvian government is working with non-governmental organizations such as the world-wide fund of nature to encourage conservation through sustainable management.
Since 2000, management plans are required for all forest related harvesting activities the emphasis is on sustainable management in line with requirements of the forest stewardship council (FSC) with so much illegal logging and such a vast area to protect, the carrying out of this law faces the problems.
The Purus-Manu corridor is located in Madre de Dios region south east of Peru, close to the border of brazil. The Purus-Manu conservation corridor is a project that supports long-term biodiversity conservation in benefiting the native communities living in the corridor. The living corridor is the largest preserved are of the Peruvian rainforest covering an area of 10 million hectares.
National parks and national reserves have been established to protect areas of high biodiversity.
Indigenous community reserves have been established giving local communities land ownership and rights over the extracting of materials from their land. These communities have their own sustainable management plans.
There are 60 or more native local communities that depend on the rainforests for food, water, clothing, housing and medicine. They are some of the most isolated communities in the rainforest. Elsewhere they have been driven out by illegal logging, farming and highway construction.
More plans were put in place in 2015 to protect the indigenous communities and enable the corridor to be managed in a sustainable way for the future.
What are threats to the
Peruvian Amazon Rainforest ?
Rain forests across the globe are heavily affected with all kinds of threats, but here are the main threats in the Peruvian rainforest. It has been made known over the last couple of years that deforestation is a huge problem, not only for the ongoing growth of these forests, but also the wildlife that lives in them
Gold mining- Gold, we all know what it is and how little there is of it, but in the rainforest huge machines come in and often blast away the river banks and cut down huge mass of trees to create space to mine. They then you Mercury and this is a highly toxic, causing a considerable harm to aquatic ecosystems and poisoning local tribes who depend upon rivers for food and water.
Highways -They cut down vast areas of trees to put highways and roads through the forest. This can cause a loss of habitat and homes for animals.
Timber- There are many valuable and rare trees in the rainforest which are continually being chopped down, and up to 95% of this is unregulated and illegal! Deforestation is a harmful operation as it takes out huge chunks in the forest, and leaves plenty of wildlife without a home and habitat.
Why is the Peruvian Amazon rain forest valuable to the planet?
They are important for the whole planet as they can play a major role in regulating the Earth's water and carbon cycles. They keep the carbon levels at bay to decrease the risk of global warming.
