The distribution and characterisation of a ecosystems
Th world contains eight major biomes. Mostly terestrial some like coral reefs are marine. Each biome has unique climatic conditions.
Temperate forests
found across Europe and in the USA. These trees lose their leaves every year and thrive in mild and wet conditions known as a temperate maritime climate.
10-21 degrees
30-60 inches yearly rainfall
Tropical rainforest
found near the Equator. The climate is hot and humid and many different species can be found here.
1800-2500 annually rainfall
20-25 degrees daily average temperature.
Coral reefs
Coral reefs are found between 30° north and 30° south of the equator. Cover less than 1 percent of the worlds oceans
Temperate grassland
found in Hungary, South Africa, Argentina and the USA. Consists of grass and trees that thrive in a temperate continental climate of moderate rainfall and mild conditions. 40 and 60 degrees north and south of the equator.
Temperate grasslands have cold winters and warm summers with some rain
50.8-88.8cm yearly rainfall
Tundra
found near the North and South poles. Very few plants and animals can survive here.
North Pole Summer- 0 Winter- -40 South Pole - Summer- -28.2 Winter- -60
Less than 166mm annually rainfall
Hot Deserts
found near the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Conditions here are very hot and dry. Plants and animals are specially adapted to survive in the harsh conditions. 30 degrees north and south of the equator, typically west coast of tropics.
20-40 degrees
2-4 cm annually rainfall
Tropical(savannah) grasslands
found mainly in central Africa, southern India, northern Australia and central South America. Long grasses and a few scattered trees are found in these hot and dry conditions.
-20-30 degrees Tropical grasslands have dry and wet seasons that remain warm all the time. Temperate grasslands have cold winters and warm summers with some rain.
90-150 cm yearly rainfall
