Nutrient Cycle
Microscopic plants like algae called zooxabthalea live within the tissues of the coral polyp, converting light from the sun into energy that can be used by the coral.
The zooxanthallae benefit from waste nutrients provided by the corals. Nitrogen-the most important nutrient in the coral ecosystem -is passed back and forth betweenthe coral and the zooxanthallae.
Coral also obtain nutrients by feeding on zooplankton( which survive by consuming phtoplankton), the sea's primary producer that converts light grom the sun into energy), bacteria and edible detritus from the ocean floor.
Fish excrete ammonia(a dissolved form of nitrogen) into the water and this can be absorbed by the coral and algae
