World's first writing system
Used sharp tools called STYLUSES because they didn't have pencils, pens or paper

Pictographs also represented syllables or basic parts of words
Sumerians also combine symbols to express moe complex ideas such as joy or sadness.
First used cuneiform to keep business records and hired a SCRIBE.
Scribe—is a writer that would be hired to document business transactions or keep track of the items people bought and sold.
Government hired scribes to keep their records of taxes that were collected.
It was a way to move up in social classes.
Most important development was the wheel!
They were the first ones to build wheeled vehicles, including carts and wagons.
Sumerians domesticated animals
They invented the POTTER'S WHEEL—a device that spins clay as a craftsperson shapes it into bowls.
Sumerians invented the plow-pulled by domesticated oxen. It was used to prepare the soil for planting.
Sumerians Writing Skills
Were used to write about history, law, grammar, math, and literature.
Sumerians wrote EPICS—long narrative poem that tells the stories of heroes.
Other Inventions—SAILBOATS-used for transporting goods; faster transportation than using animals
Sumerians built SEWERS under city streets

Rich Sumerians lived in large palaces or two-story houses.
Other Sumerians lived in small houses or one-story houses.
These homes had a small courtyard and six or seven rooms around it.
