Systems Theory
Introduced by Urie Bronfenbrenner. The theory was a way to explain how outside influences influence an individual. Starting with the smallest relationships which are the most personal and to the least personal.
-
How it applies to Social work: For social workers, the focus is on the the first three systems: micro, mezzo and macro.
Micro: individual level. Parents, children, siblings etc
-
Macro: Largest level of influence: Government, legislators
-
An important aspect of macro work is program evaluation. These include audits and research methods that can be used to see what is working and what is not in order to improve programs. As well as see why they are effective in the first place.
-
Grant Writing: A lot goes into grant writing. This is an important tool that can be used to get funding for an organization. To be an effective grant the grant writer needs to have ample research, and do their homework on what the rules are in order to make sure they follow everything.
Prevention and protection: There are many levels to these protections. Preventative care is all about stopping a problem before they occur. There are many methods that are proven to be effective although there is a debate on which is most effective in the long run. Personally I believe that prevention is key to helping prevent bigger problems. Why not stop the fire from happening rather then do damage control.
