The Skeleton
Functions
Supports the body
Protect internal organs
Assists movement
Stores Minerals
Blood cell formation site
Structure
Axial Skeleton: Supports the central axis of the body
Skull
Vertebral column
Rib cage
Appendicular Skeleton
Legs
Arms

Shoulders
Bones: Solid network of living tissue that is surrounded by calcium deposits
Structure
Periosteum: connective tissue that surrounds the bone
Thick layer of compact, non solid bone beneath the periosteum
Haversian channels: Channels in the compact bone that contain nerves and blood vessels
Spongy Bone
Bone Marrow: Soft tissue located in the cavity of the bone
Red bone marrow: Storages stem cells that produce blood cells
Yellow bone marrow: Keeps fat
Development
Cartilage: Type of connective tissue that does not contain blood vessels. It composes the majority of the early bone in a embryo
Ossification: Process in which cartilage is replaced by the bone in the skeletal composition
Osteoblasts: Cells that help the ossification process by secreting minerals into the bones
Osteocytes: Mature form of osteoblasts. Mantains minerals and makes the bone strong
Osteoclasts: Cells that break down minerals so that the bone can be rearranged and healed
