Trial by ordeal
Trail by hot iron
The accused would have to hold a hot iron and walk a certain amount of steps. The wound would ten be bandaged up and if it healed within 3 days then you were innocent but if not you were guilty.
Trial by bread
The victim ad to eat a piece of stale bread and if they swallowed it without choking they were innocent. This was reserved for members of the clergy.
Trail by water
The accused was tied up and thrown in 'holy' water. If they floated they were guilty as people believed that the blessed water would not accept evil.
Punishment
Wergild
The person who committed the crime had to pay the victim a certain amount of money depending on their social status.
Stocks and Pillory
The pillory secured the arms and neck and people would have to stand outside for long period of time. People would often get things thrown at them.
