Offer family resources for long term solutions housing, shelters, employment, welfare, food banks and short term solutions such as charities/churches offering clothing and/or vouchers for necessities.
Make the classroom a safe place for student with positivity, nurturing actions (encouraging student), consistency, and transparency in daily activities.
Model and expect a classroom community of empathy, love, and family; use diverse reading material about overcoming adversities and supporting others in need.
Allow student to "own" a space in the classroom where he/she can keep possessions that could get lost while moving around frequently.
Assign work outside of textbooks; allow time within classroom for student to work on projects and assignments in a productive environment.
Have necessities available for the student (such baby wipes, sanitary napkins, toothbrush/toothpaste, body spray, healthy snacks) for student to use and feel more confident when she/he is not able to shower.
The school should get a social worker involved to ensure student's basic needs are being met and family is supported.
Observe student for signs of emotional, mental, and social disorders. Refer to learning support department as needed for student to be evaluated for I.E.P or additional support.
