Astronauts needs navigation tools because they will help them reach the destination without damage on the ship.
Lightweight Net
Collision Detection System
It is a net made of braided plasma rope that will be put out in front of the spacecraft and will protect the shuttle from large, potentially damaging collisions
pros
Is very light and will not impair taking off and landing
Could be deployed after launch to avoid damage whilst taking off or lanidng
Will block larger rocks from hitting the front of the space craft head on
cons
Could impair space shuttles movement
Could be difficult to deploy
Could tear or take damage
Can detect objects that from very far away
The ship will not experience any weight changes and will still be able to fly the same.
Puts the ship out of harm
Cons
The detection system could detect two objects at once causing the ships thrusters to activate at the same time.
The system could miss an object and the ship could get damaged.
Can malfunction and not work. This could result in damaging of the ship.
The collision detection system would be a sensor that will be installed in the ship and if it detects anything that would harm the ship is will deploy a specific thruster and remove the ship from the area of danger.
Scout Drone
Flys out ahead of the space shuttle and is controlled by one of the astronauts. It is mounted with a camera for scouting out any asteroids or space debris in front of or around the ship
pros
cons
Provides an extra eye on any exterior damage and space debris
Pairs very well with an asteroid detector, when an asteroid is picked up on the scanner the drone can go out to take a look
Can seek out a safe path around any asteroids and/or debris
Will have a limited range
If it gets damaged by anything it would be lost to space with little chance of retrieval
Takes fuel to pilot
