Early Developments
mid-1800s : generelly arranged and sold as separate services and not as a "package" -> recognize how potential the international market is
1900s: total package was borrn under the recognition of how potential off the travel agent - tour operator
1950s: the emergence of air travel created more oppotunities for tour operators
1960s: growing demand hro holidays and the ongoing expansion of tourism
The rise of the Package Holiday
1960s: a package that is standardized, reproducible, consistent, safe. Product type > specific destination.
Early 1970: more exotic, signs off a trend for independent holidays, more flexibility inconfiguration. invariably taken up by the elite in society then gradually by wider society
1990s: consumers were no longer naive and in-experienced tourists as they gained more experience off travelling to foreign destinations and other cultures.New desstination : "sun, sand and sea. " Positional good", built on the idea off "ego-tripping" where by the customers seek to gain status among their peers in terms of the "wow" factor
2000s: the proportion off package holidays had declined by 10% by 2000 but still a dominant

Classification
Static holidays, or single-destination holi-
days, as the name suggests, take place in des
a single fixed location
Multicentre: combines 2 or more destinations into 1 trip
tours:
Escorted tour: a prearranged travel programme escorted bt a tour manager or tour leader who commonly provides a wide variety of services and info tho-out the tour
Guided tour hosted package: travel independently but also receive guidance and assistance from a host based in the tourist destination(s)
Independent: a package designed for independent tourists. Including air tivkets, hotel bookings, transfer and additional serives
Tailor-made packages: Deciding all aspects of a holiday to meet the customers' needs on an individual basis rather than selling ready-assembled holidays
Cruising: cruise ships
Tour Operator
Types of Tour Operator:
Domestic tour operators: assemble and combine components into inclusive tours/packages designed and promoted to the domestic market
Outbound tour operators: package together accomodation and transport and usually include transfers in the traditional inclusive tour format for destination outside of the client's home country
Inbound tour operators: devise and coordinate travel arrangements on behalf of international/overseas tour operators or travel organizers
