Adopting, Adapting, and Creating
materials in ESP
- Adopting published materials
- textbooks are a convenience for both instructors and learners because they provide structure for class, reducing instructors work and its cheap. It brings a lot of benefit
- Adapting published materials
- Published materials might need to be adapted
before they can be used successfully in the ESP classroom because :
a. Materials used might provide outdated descriptions
b. Might also ignore important points or include irrelevant ones
c. Present points in an overly simplistic
d. Present points in an overly complicated manner
e. Might even be confusing
How to overcome issue :
a. Low level classes - Simplify, expand, delete, replace , or reorder the materials and/or add new ones
b. High level classes - Expand the explanation, replace it with a more in-depth discussion or add an interesting anecdote or example to deepen the learners’ understanding of the concept
c. Add or delete extra units as necessary.
- 3.Creating custom materials
- Some believe that creating materials is
preferable and saves time
- There are Five-step approach to custom materials creation
STEP 1: REVIEW PREVIOUS WORK - Do some research by making a list of useful ideas reported in research articles and review published materials in the same general
area to see how they introduce, explain, and develop language skills. STEP 2: CREATE A GENERAL PLAN - Create a general plan for what to target in the materials and how to sequence the items. STEP 3: SELECT ‘CARRIER CONTENT - Choose suitable ‘carrier content’ that will form the basis for explaining, exemplifying, and practicing different learning pointsSTEP 4: CREATE EXPLANATIONS AND EXERCISES -Create explanations and exercises that allow learners to reach their learning objectives in the most efficient and effective way.STEP 5: EVALUATE AND REVISE THE MATERIALS - Evaluate the created materials in terms of how well
they fulfill the roles of materials described earlier in the chapter and decide if and where they might need to be revised to better match the needs of
the learners and other stakeholders
Do not forget we have "just in time" custom made materials too!
There are 2 STEPSSTEP 1: COLLECT TARGET LANGUAGE SAMPLES - Ask the course administrator to provide some target language samples if you dont have any or ask learners to produce some on the first session of the courseSTEP 2: ANALYZE AND GROUP TARGET LANGUAGE SAMPLES - Analyze
them and identify general areas to address and specific issues associated with individual learners.
- Group the
samples into different focus areas, and pick the best prototypical examples
-Present the prototypical examples and then initiate a discussion with learners about why the particular examples were
selected, what strengths and weaknesses they display, and how they can be improved

- Types of ESP settings includes of classroom materials that are designed based on adaption from textbooks, existing sources or newly created ones based on authentic samples of language from the target setting.
- Other settings includes of the ESP instructor having freedom to adopt,
adapt, or create materials for their course
- Therefore instructors need to consider how one affects the other and be able to adapt the materials and strategies to your preferred method of teaching and the learners' needs.
