Powers of Supreme Court
Guardian of Constitution: safeguards by canceling laws if violates constitution, can write writs for the enforcement of fundamental rights
Scope of Judicial Review: can review/cancel any law or executive order of central or state govm if violated laws of constitution
Advisory: can advise president of legal constitutional on request, may or may not accept it, Revisory: power to review any judgement or order to rectify errors
Court of Record: records and prints all cases and judgements it handles for refrences in future cases
Apellate J: hears apeals against judgements of high courts, final court of appeal, power to change and review decisions
Original J: brought directly for first time disputes between union/state govm, violation of constitution or fundamental rights of an individual
Judicial System in India
federal system, 2 levels (centre state), unified system of courts for union and states
independent, administers justice, define interpret laws, protect rights of citizens

Supreme Court
highest judicial authority, New Delhi, guardian of constitution, headed by chief justice of India and other judges appointed by president and counicil of ministers
Judges: citizen, advocates of high court for 10 or judges of high court for 5, distinguished jurist of president
until 65 years old, cant be dismissed before term, only impeached for proven misbehavior or incapacity

Qualifications of judges: citizens, judicial office in india for 10, advocates of high court for 10
can serve till 62, resign or impeached by president
highest level: Chief Justice + number of other judges decided by president according to size of state
Powers

can review change decisions made in subordinate courts, can transfer cases from one court to another, supervises and controls functioning
Original J: can hear cases brought to it for the first time (regarding fundamental rights, election petitions etc)

maintains records of proceedings and declensions, serve as references for lower courts in future
Writs: form of written command or legal document giving order or direction to a person to act or not act a particular way, by supreme or high court, Prohibition, Mandamus, Habeas Corpus, Certiorati, Quo Warranto
