My PE Subject Lead Vision
Inclusive Physical Education
Accessible to all children
Removing barriers to children's learning
Adapting lessons
Differentiation
Less able children - can play simplified versions of sports, potentially change the rules to suit the needs of the children. Smaller areas or adapted equipment can support development.
More able children - can act as experts or coaches, can also give them more complex roles e.g. umpire, to develop their knowledge of a sport from a perspective different from that of a player.
Use of PE resources
Enables all children to feel confident in PE.
Ensuring inclusivity
Competition and Sports
Extra-curricular activities - make these more accessible to all children e.g. by making them free.
Links to the national curriculum.
Organising matches and tournaments.
Encouraging children to take on roles and responsibilities within sports e.g. captain, time-keeper, warm up leader, cool-down leader etc.
Develops children's team and communication skills.
Develops children's confidence and self-esteem.
Allows children to understand that competitions are more than just winning or losing, they should be enjoyable and develop a variety of skills not just physical.
Positive attitude towards PE
All teachers of PE should be supported with planning, teaching and assessment.
Aim to improve teacher confidence when teaching PE.
Encourage all teachers to have a positive attitude towards PE.
Demonstrate to teachers how physical activity can be incorporated into children's learning in a variety of ways e.g. brain breaks.
Ensure teachers know the difference between physical activity, physical education and sport.
Co-teaching and supporting other teachers who are less confident teaching PE.
Ensure that lessons are enjoyable not only for the children but for the teacher as this will encourage all to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle every day.
COVID-19
Current need to improve children's mental health
Home-schooling
Ensuring children are eating healthily
Ensuring children are active during lockdown and homeschooling.
Need to consider access to facilities and resources, as some children will have more accessibility than others at home.
Ensuring social distancing
Cleaning equipment between usage
A whole school awareness of the benefits of Physical Education
Benefits children's mental health and wellbeing
Counter to obesity
Ensure teachers, parents and children are aware of the benefits of physical activity, physical education and sport.
Ensure there is a whole school approach to PE, within which the PE lead is supported by others including the headteacher, other teachers and parents when implementing PE.
Encourage regular meetings with all teachers to share good PE practice, discuss children's needs and ensure they are all moving towards the same developmental objectives.
Encourage student voice as a chance for children to have an input on what they learn in PE and what they experience beyond the curriculum e.g. offer suggestions for competitions.
Funding
Look into areas of the curriculum which may require more funding e.g. swimming.
External companies can support PE teaching and extra-curricular activities.
Look at assessment and children's progress to see which areas of the curriculum need more resources to support teaching.
Ensure the resources being funded are appropriate for a variety of ages, abilities and activities.
