Unit Topic: Affordable and Clean Energy
Pre-assessment: ABC Lists
Students will list the letters of the alphabet on the left side of their paper.
Beside each letter, the students write words related to the topic that begin with that letter.
When students have exhausted all their ideas, they hand in their lists.
The results from the pre-assessment will be used to group the student into three groups.
While the teacher is sorting the pre-assessments into three groups, the class will be watching a video about William Kamkwamba

" independently.
After reading, they will fill out the graphic organizer independently.
Then, the five students will discuss five prompts provided by the teacher.
1.What happened to Brave, Sarah's favorite dolphin?
What will Sarah's machine do?
What countries did Sarah visit?
Why do people help Sarah?
Does Sarah accomplish her goal?

These twelve students will work in pairs at the computer.
They will use the UN website to do research.

After completing the infographic, the pairs will present them to the class.
Tracking Progress
Students will take weekly quizzes to track their progress. The quizzes will be provided in multiple formats as a way to differentiate.

: quizzes will be long answer format.

: quizzes will be in fill-in-the-blank and short answer formats.
Low: quizzes will be matching and multiple choice formats.

Learn key vocabulary
affordable
: the price that a family has to pay for the provision of energy services has to be reasonable in
relation to their monthly/annual income.
reliable
: reliability refers to the quality and quantity of the energy service that must be met by the provider.
sustainable
: refers to the consumption of energy that does not have negative effects on the environment.
Special Needs Students: create picture cards to accompany the vocabulary
ELL: provide translation in the native language for the vocabulary or allow students to use translation devices
Sorting Activity: student will sort pictures into renewable or non-renewable resource categories

Poster Activity: students will work together to make a single poster showing renewable and non-renewable resources
Special Needs Students
: provide printed images to glue on the poster if the student has physical limitations impacting drawing.
