The National State
Mass politics: reforms expanded political democracy (universal male suffrage and mass political parties)
Britain and France expanded right to vote, liberal reforms unsuccessful in Spain and Italy
Britain had two-party parliamentary system, political democracy, Reform Act of 1884 = all male taxpayers or renters could vote
English and Irish Parliaments united, but Irish detested British landlords and large rents
Irish Land League called for Irish Home Rule (self-gov. by having separate Parliament, but not complete independence)
