Hitlers consolidation of power- Hitler needed a majority in order to get things done, in March 1932 he called an election. Hitler did many things to consolidate his power.
-
It created lots of fear within the people, Hitler said they were under attack.
To help them while they were under attack Hitler said he needed emergency powers. Hindenburg gave him them and support for communists was crushed.
- Just before the election there was a fire at the Reichstag
- An investigation took place and the Dutch communist Van Der Lubbe was arrested.
- This made people suspicious, they thought the Communists were planning to take over.
- However some people thought the Reichstag fire was planned by the Nazis to drive the communists out and gain power.
After the support for communists was crushed the Nazis got 288 seats in the Reichstag however this still wasn't a majority so they had to join with the DNVP ( German nationalist people party) to get the majority.
Hitler quickly used the majority to pass the Enabling Act which allowed him to make laws without consulting the Reichstag for the next four years ( he said he needed this as Germany was under attack). With this power Hitler did many things:
- Banned opposing parties and put their leaders in concentration camps.
- On May 1st 1933 he banned all trade unions.
- Put Nazis in charge of all state governments.
- They used fear and intimidation to make sure people didn't challenge the Nazis.
When Hindenburg died, Hitler made himself Chancellor and President combined and called his new role Fuhrer
-
No major group remained to challenge Hitler, he had total power in a one party state.
- The night of long knives.
On June 30th 1934 (NOLK) Hitler had the 400 leaders of the SA shot, he tells the main leader to kill himself, he refuses so Hitler shoots him anyway
The SA, under their leader Ernst Rohm, became a threat due to their numbers and military training.
