Pre-Assessment Process
10A1 IELTS Art Unit
The 5 students who
answered most
, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions
correctly
They will sit together with critical thinking questions about reasons why artists create portraits taking into consideration, time, technology, history, race, socioeconomic classes, etc.
They will look at several famous portraits and read the background of the artist.
After some time, they will compete in teams on quizizz or kahoot to check their attainment level of these famous portraits with the title and name of the artist.
They will try to make judgments about the importance of portraits at that point in time.
Write a short autobiography and sketch out a self-portrait to be used in a 4 Corners Activity later.
The 5 students who appear to have
limited knowledge
about the topic
3 are
struggling with language
and are at
different reading levels
Working together, they will complete a Vocabulary Building list and I will routinely come by to help them with spelling but encourage them to help each other and refer to their IPA handout.
They will be able to refer to their sheet while we go over vocabulary as a class & I will use their list to pre-assess the other groups as well.
They will be given portraits to match with titles, artist's names and dates to get a better understanding of portraits through the ages.
These students will be given weekly Quizizz/Kahoot quizzes to reinforce the vocab and knowledge from class.
For homework, they will be given easy-to-read autobiographies on artists with more challenging questions to keep them thinking.
2 students who have
little to no comprehension
of the the topic and need to be
tested
further for
special needs
They can draw a self-portrait after watching a video about portraits (link below).
Self-portraits throughout history
These students will work on the vocabulary building assignments in the Homework Club after school since we do not have any special ed specialists or classrooms.
When we have class activities such as, "Find Someone Who-art related", they will work closely with a more advanced student for comprehension checking and translation help.
The 12 students who have
some knowledge
about the topic as shown in their score, but
need to develop higher order thinking skills.
Regular assessments
in the form of
mock IETLS speaking & writing tests
will allow me to further keep track of their progress with a 9 band score.
Once they move from the 4-5 range to 6+, they are allowed to join the higher level group.
I will give them these questions to be practiced with other students in their group, before handing them out to everyone to have more time to think.

ideas bank
to help them put right answers together with the use of
collective brainstorming.
Working in pairs, they can complete this fill-in-the-blank worksheet with word bank.
The
Pre-Assessment Part 2
: Students will be introduced to examples & non-examples of famous art portraits as an introduction to the IELTS Art History project.
Example
I will be aware of those students who can correctly identify the artists and group them with the weakest students at some point to help tutor and translate.
Non-example
The Pre-Assessment Part 1
Students will be given a survey about Art which is to be completed alone without much assistance just to check their knowledge on vocab and content before moving onto the next assessment and grouping them.
