Immortality
People used to die due to natural causes such as heart attack or something but now they have to become killed to die.
Overpopulation is happening because the age of mortality is done and people won't die unless they would become assassinated or killed by someone.
Thunderhead is the cause of this. Thunderhead eliminated death, inequality, poverty, diseases, etc.

Power

Others are just human being and they can get gleaned anytime by the group of Scythe's as they have the power to kill them.
The group of Scythes have a ring that can give an immunity to people for one year. This shows power because normal human beings don't have such rings like that.
"She knelt, kissed his ring, her DNA was read and was transmitted to the Scythedom's immunity databases...He grinned satisfied." (page 21)

The story is based in a world where "Scythes", people who glean randomly (kill) have a lot more power than a normal human being
CHANGE OF POWER
Throughout the novel, we are introduced to Rowan and Citra. Both got chosen to compete to become a scythe. Before becoming one, the become a "Scythe's apprecntice". They wear a a yellow wrist band, when people see that wristband, they automatically fall under their commands.

Throughout the whole story and 15 chapters, we get introduced to many different characters who have different stories and experience the whole "Scythe" scheme differently. The main 2 characters are Rowan and Citra, one of them will be a scythe but first 2 of them must train for the role.
