Sylvester Make Me Feel

Looked into spotify playlists, indiviual artists, youtube videos that speak to queer afrofuturism or black queer speculative futures.

Right now I'm working more with black queer speculative futures and the will transition into afrofuturisms (see outline). So the Afrofuturism part will be the second half of my project that I work on after submitting the first half for peer-review.

Feedback/Questions from Peers

A'Kailah- Do you think your project will exist as a sort of audio visual documentary or something that exists purely in sound?

Garland-Will the soundbites and songs come from what already exists in Black and Brown queer culture or will folx be invited to create and share or both?

Juan Carlos: Cool project. I commend you on honoring the sometimes-ignored voices of Black and Brown queer people. I am interested to see your results. There are some video clips of the playwriting festival called “Brown and Out” on YouTube that might be helpful to you. This is a festival produced by Casa 0101 theater and is aimed at representing the Latinx LGBTQ+ community.

Scott: Hi Addie! I truly enjoyed reading your description and thoughts about your project. It sounds incredible and inspiring. I'm also impressed with the amount of "work" this one artifact will be doing. I really look forward to what emerges! You mentioned "living documentation" - do you imagine this as a starting point for something you will continually build upon - either alone or in collaboration with others?

Scott: Hi Addie! It was great to see what you've compiled so far for your project and exciting to be exposed to some new (for me) music and other content. I also like how you've broken the project into two parts, one for Black speculative futures and one for Afrofuturism. I'm interested in how you envision the final version coming together. Will these be edited into one track or video, or exist as a playlist? Do you see the two parts in conversation with one another? Will you be adding commentary/analysis to accompany it? Sorry...that was more than one question...I'm just really intrigued by what you're working on and can't wait to see how it all turns out!

Kiandra: Hi Addie, I really enjoyed looking at your Mind map and how you are using it to think forward in your project. It is helpful (for me, and I am sure you too) to see the video there--it sort of creates a visual/musical note that helps me to mentally "sound out" your project. I am interested in how you envision using the final project. Essentially, where will it live and interact with the audience? I'm sorry if this was addressed already. I'm wondering if thinking about how you imagine it will live and gain access to your audience will help you to think through your question, "if this project could invite queerings of Afrofuturism and Black speculative futures." I think this is a great question, and perhaps one way of triangulating a response, or working towards a response would be found in the end product--how and where it will live, how it will interact and intersect with its audience, how the audience will find and utilize/or not utilize it, etc. I hope this is helpful! I'm looking forward to seeing your final project!

Genesis- Hello!! Man, I was so impressed with your mind map/project its sooo good. I love the use of music videos. I can spend days just watching music videos. I thought it was sick how youre mixing peoples words with peoples songs? I can definitely see a bop in the making! I guess my question is what genre are you thinking of? Or maybe mixing genres? Reimagining song structures/beats/flow?

March 4 Slack Response: What connections might you make between what we've done thus far in the unit and what you'll do in your digital intersections project?
After reading Safiya Umoja Noble’s article, I am thinking about maybe doing a project that centers Black Women and Black Girls by Black women and Black Girls. Keeping with the Black feminist and queer intersections in digital presence, I am wondering if doing a similar project to my Unit 1 project (a mix +video) but then offer an engagement element that counters the ways in which the state codifies representation online that Noble critiques. (like through engagements with hashtags, somehow challenging the state’s roots digitally) I am curious about any advice, input for this as a possible direction for my unit 2 project.

Scott: Hi Addie, I love the idea percolating for your project! I don't really have suggestions to offer, but I think it'd make a powerful intervention. I imagine, but off the top of my head am not aware, that there probably have been hashtag campaigns or other types of collective digital expressions around this topic. Aggregating those into one space could be very impactful.

Use one track only?

Create my own music- digitally or through using the Midi with my keyboard

Wrapping it all up and connecting unit 1 and unit 2 projects

This might be tricky with the unit 4 project since it encompasses so much

Where to share this work: on platform people can stream to listen to, dance to, engage with, use in courses.

Integrate sound into this unit 3 project

Liberatory Focus

Use spoken word again and add music to it?

Create a new mix with new material that speaks to the other two mixes for the unit 4 project?

This will come after getting some feedback and engaging with you all as I am not sure which direction to go yet

Started looking into possible songs to include, but until I get clear by checking in with you all, I am waiting to do more research
