Translational research
"WHY"...Uses knowledge gained from research to develop treatment and strategies for preventing disease
Homeostasis
"dynamic steady state"
-
Long distance control
Input from multiple sources, output on multiple targets (blood pressure)
Components of a Cell
-
-
-
Intracellular Components
Mitochondria
Contains DNA, Generates energy for cellular function
-
Golgi Apperatus
Receives proteins made from ER, modifies them, packages into vesicels
-
-
-
Epithelia
-
-
-
Protective
Prevent exchange from external to internal (integumentary system, mucose membrane)
-
-
Reactions:
-
-
-
Dehydration
two molecules combine into one, lowing water in the process
Feedback Loops
Positive
The response REINFORCES the stimuli, rather than removing it or decreasing it. Could lead to a viscous cycle of ever-increasing response.
-
Negative
A response that opposes or removes the stimuli signal. Aid in maintaining homeostasis. Neg Loops can restore that normal state (water temp) but not prevent the initial disturbance (drop in water temp)
Feed Foward control
Prevent changes before they occur, rather than responding to a change after it has occured.
Ex. Salivating when near food. OR hormone released into blood in response to presence of glucose in the blood stream
Work:
-
Transport work
Moving Ions and molecules through cell membranes, often against concentration gradient
Mechanical work
Movement like muscles producing limb movement, cilia beating, movement of organelles within cytosol
Concentration of Ions
ECF
-
Low: Sodium (Na+), Chloride (Cl-)
ICF
High: sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl-)
