Innovation Management:
developing tools
that seek to
improve success
and
reduce costs
Stage-Gate (macro level mgmt)
Discover Stage -> Look for new opportunities and new pdt ideas, Idea screen
Scoping -> 2nd screen: quick look at market opportunity, technical requirements and capabilities available
Biz case: critical stage building on scoping stage w/ more in-depth technical, marketing and biz feasibility
Dev: pdt design, prototyping, manu design, prep for manufacture and launch
Test and validate all aspects of pdt and commercialisation plans to validate all assumptions and conclusions
Launch: full commercialization including full-scale manufacturing and commercial launch
Post-launch review: 6 mths to 1 year , see if there's any learnings
Criticism that it is too time consuming etc, so different versions were developed
Stage Gate XPress, Stage Gate Lite
Size of Stage-Gate process
depends on the
complexity of the product
and the
newness of the product
to the company (aka
level of risk
)
Pros and cons
Pros:
Discipline and constraints into NPD efforts
Emphasises on quality decision making
Transparent to all involved
Can be adapted to wide range of organisations
Cons:
Can become quite bureaucratic
When no fully understood, can seem too rigid and costly
Discipline and constraints can be perceived as stifling to creativity
2nd Stage-Gate
Should-meet and must-meet criteria:
Strategic (importance and fit)
Product and competitive edge
Market attractiveness
Synergies (leverage core competencies)
Technical feasibility
Financial reward
Agile (Day to day)
Sprint: Time-boxed work efforts
where small part of the project is executed (2-4 weeks)
Sprints: Review, Test, Build, Design
Scrum
: daily meetings to outline what was accomplished, tasks to complete and foreseeable problem
Product backlog
:
prioritized feature list
, containing short descriptions of all functionality desired in the product
Roles
1. Individual Team Member
: empowered to take responsibility for project execution - can make decisions for themselves
2. Product owner
: typically someone in mgmt outside of the team, someone who represents stakeholder interests
3. Scrum Master
: facilitates daily meetings and comms with Product Owner (like george lol)
Advantages & Disadvantagrs
Pros:
Fast moving
Lightly controlled & transparent
Iterative
Cons:
lack of oversight in key decision points as compared to Stage-Gate
Can lead to
scope creep
(constantly iterative testing and keep improving and going and going - never-ending)
Task not well defined, can spread over several sprints - the sprints lose their adv
Requires managers' trust the team (lacks transparency)
Lean
Benefits & limitations of PD
Pros:
Focus on transformation of info (
only what customers value is important
and not heavy handed governance
Simplify collab and enable design optimisation
Scalable
Manage risk to schedule cost, performance and quality
Cons:
Requires dedicated and exp workers
Change in org structure and culture
Strong supplier management (to get goods in time)
Willingness to accept changes in
project goals and directions
Rapid Learning cycles in PD
Learn as much as possible at the start, uncover problems early so that better decisions can be made.
Push decisions as far back as possible to be flexible. We can respond as we learn more and as market changes. (To death with SJ types lol)
It;s like Agile for tangible products.
Characteristics:
Agile project mgmt systems to manage high uncertainty
Lean PD practices
Insights from design thinking, lean startup and innov. mgmt practices (like stage-gate and agile combi)
4.
Combining
Hybrid Stage-gate and Agile
Stage-gate lacks speed, Agile lacks oversight in key decision points
Benefits:
Deals w uncertainty and validates assumption
More adaptive, can deal with changing requirements - early prototypes are being built so the process is more adaptive, design can be changed earlier, and costs are lower.
Focuses teams, accel. dev. and improve comms.
dedi cross functional team, sprints bring urgency to projects, everyone is up to date.
