The bright and dark sides of personality: implications for personnel selection in individual and team contexts
-
Hogan, 2005). Barrick et al. (2001) found a correlation of 0.47 when the big 5 personality traits were used to predict job performance.
-
However many believe that the effects are small.
Hogan has looked at this overall and thinks that personality measures work well when compared at the same time with other measures
often a neglected factor affecting the validility of using perosnality traits is that fact that there are benefits and costs of each trait, so they should be considered as trade-offs
this however does not mean that one particular trait is "better" than the other, but that certain traits may be more desirable in set contexts.
-
Can have bright and dark desirability which can have either positive or negative implications in that situation
-
Dark TRAITS
Trait Hositility
likely to have jobs of greater responsibility and wider schope. more effective at defining and controllong there own work
define as a set of negative attitudes. often includes desire to pre-emptively harm or see harm inflicted. more negative attitudes to interpersonal relationships at work.
impulsivity
-
Liknked to unsafe sexual behaviours, drug use etc. diminished reasoning ability. Also in non work settings may have greater performance variability
Type A personality
increased risk for coronary disease, likely due to the result of heightened sensitivity to stress or more likely to be dissatisfied with their job, experience more job burnout
-
higher performance among management, tend to achieve more due to having achievement motivation setting more ambitious goals
Narcissism
in competitive situations like game theoretic exercises, seem to do better. Higher life satisfaction, lower levels of sytress and anxiety and lesss likely to be depressed
often overestimate their leadership effectiveness, task performance and work place deviance
Diversity
Hoffman assumed that the more diversity the more ideas and perspectives that can be applied to a situation
however may have negative effects, members may be less attracted to each other and the group, less likely to have accurate perceptions of other members and their opinions. Less likely to communicate effectively. Could end up with the dark side of personalities becoming even darker
Research shows that may be beneficial in terms of members' extraversion, however not so for agreeableness and conscientiousness
