constricts small blood vessels (flight or flight)
dilates pupils
Administration Alerts
tissue injury (extravasation) = damage soft contact lenses
Adverse Effects
HTN
Increased HR leading to severe reflex bradycardia
rebound congestion (long term use)
narrow angle glaucoma (secondary mydriatic effect)
burning of nasal mucose
BLACK BOX WARNING
DEATH IF USED IV
Drug-Drug Interactions
MaOi use can result in hypertensive crisis
Contraindications
narrow angle glaucoma patients
Heart disease patients
USES
intranasal/decongestants
dilates pupils/ topical use
reverse hypotension/ parental
