Process of Sexual Reproduction in Plants
Pollination
Transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma
Self-Pollination
When pollen grain
lands on female part of same flower
or
different flower of same plant
Cross-Pollination
When pollen grain
lands on stigma of different flower of different plant
Fertilization
Ovary contains 3 nuclei- 2 polar nuclei and the egg
Pollen grain lands on stigma
and
pollen tube is formed
2 male gametes are sent down the tube
The 1st gamete fuses with the egg to form the zygote
The 2nd gamete fuses with the polar nuclei to form endosperms, which is called triple fusion
Endosperms act as food for developing embryo
Seed Formation
Zygote divides repeatedly to form embryo
Ovule ripens to form seed and develops seed coat
Other parts of the flower may fall off
Upon germination,
radicle comes out of seed and grows to become roots
Similarly,
plumule comes out and becomes the shoot of the plant
