Advantages and Disadvantages of Elizabeth I's possible marriage and her staying single
MARRIAGE
DISADVANTAGES
Disadvantage I: If she marries a Catholic, the newly Protestant made England would be easier to convert into Catholicism
CATHOLIC SUITORS
King Philip II of Spain, Archduke Charles of Austria
Disadvantage II: If Elizabeth I marries, her position of Supreme Leader and Sovereign of England might be pushed aside and her husband might take over.
Disadvantage III: If Elizabeth I marries an Englishman, it may lead to internal fighting and jealousy as the Englishman would want to become King and the Sovereign.
ENGLISH SUITORS
Sir Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester
Disadvantage IV: If Elizabeth I marries, the image of herself she portrayed -The Queen who looked to England's safety and happiness first compared to her personal happiness- would be shattered, especially if the relation was foreign and/or caused turbulence in England.
Disadvantage V: If Elizabeth I marries, the hope she wanted to give women and the proof that she wanted to give to the patriarchal society- That women could rule peacefully and beautifully, a very hard-to-believe notion at that time, especially after the reigns of Queen Matilda and Queen Mary I- would be lost. It would cement that women, Queen or not, had to marry as it was their duty.
