Algae: Plant-Like Protists
Green Algae
Can be unicellular, multicellular, or colonial
Cell walls made out of cellulose and store food as carbohydrates
contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
Diatoms
They store food as oil, making them a nutritious food source and buoyant in water
Diatom cell walls are made up of silica
Diatoms are photosynthetic autotrophs that use chlorophyl and carotenoids as pigments
Produce both sexually and asexually
Phylum Bacillariophyta are diatoms
Dinoflagellates
Cell walls made of cellulose
Some are autotrophic while some are heterotrophic
Predominantly unicellular with 2 flagella
Some are bioluminescent, meaning they emit light
Phylum Pyrrophyta are dinoflagellates
Euglenoids
Contains both characteristics of plants and animals
Most euglenoids photosynthesize but they don't have a cell wall, they can also be heterotrophs
Phylum Euglenophyta, euglenoids, are plant-like protists
Euglenoids have a pellicle, which allows them to crawl through mud when the water level is too low
Euglenoids also have an eyespot, which is a light-sensitive receptor that helps orient them toward the light for photosynthesis
Brown Algae
Phylum Phaeophyta contain the brown algae, some of the largest, multicellular algae
Includes all species of kelp
Color comes from the second pigment called fucoxanthin
Chrysophytes
Have carotenoids as a photosynthetic pigment
Most chrysophytes are unicellular, but some are colonial meaning that a group of cells join together and form a close association.
Phylum Chrysophyta, chrysophytes, are yellow-green or golden-brown algae
Red Algae
Color comes from a photosynthetic pigment called phycobilin
Phycobilin absorbs blue and violet light that penetrates deeper into the water, allowing red algae to live in deeper water than other algae
Phylum Rhudophyta, red algae, contains mostly multicellular organisms
Used to thicken syrups, puddings, and shampoos
