Once developed, emphysema can't be reversed. If you have emphysema, your doctor will likely diagnose the condition like a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Emphysema gets worse over time, and it affects everyone differently. That means there's no way doctors can know for sure who long you can expect to live if you have it
Lung damage in emphysema cannot be reversed. If the disease is not treated, damage and symptoms will continue to get worse. If treated, the symptoms can improve.
Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung). In people with emphysema, the lung tissue involved in the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) is impaired or destroyed.
