UNIT 18: Solubility

Solubility equilibria
Ksp is usually just products of aqueous ions since solids, liquids excluded
Remember, all reversible reactions can reach equilibrium and solutions are no exception

Saturated solutions
Solvation is where solvent surrounds/dissolves solute, crystallization is opposite where solute reattaches to solid
When XY --> X (aq) + Y (aq) = X (aq) + Y (aq) --> XY, equilibrium is reached (solvation = crystallization)
Equilibrium = liquid is saturated; no other solid can dissolve for that given amount. Ksp is satisfied
Supersaturated: solution heated to increase solubility, then slowly cooled to not allow crystals. Then seed crystal

Precipitation of ions
Using differing Ksps of compounds, one can use a common anion to precipitate out a lower Ksp first
