Behaviourism and Constructivism
Behaviourism
Differences
What the learnes does, proper response to a given stimulus (observable).
Learner is reactive.
Basic definitions and explanations of concepts; generalization, recall.
Technology:
Multi-media used to present content during instruction.
Examples
Reward the intervetion, punish bad behavior, subtract and add points, get up when the teacher enters, severely penalize copying, reinforce academic interest, investigation as punishment, the sound of the doorbell, routines, expel from classes.
All behaviors are acquired through conditioning, which occurs through interaction with the environment. Our actions are shaped by environmental stimuli. Any person can be trained to perform any task, within their physical capabilities.
Constructivism
Differences
How the learner interprets the new information and applies to their own reality (meaning constantly evolves).
Learner is proactive.
higher-level problem solving and critical analysis; emphasis on real world scenarios.
Technology:
Student created presentations used to foster cooperative group work and used as an alternative assessment.
Examples
Reciprocal teaching/learning, Inquiry-based learning (IBL), Problem-based learning (PBL), Cooperative learning.
People actively construct or make their own knowledge, and that reality is determined by your experiences as a learner. Using your previous knowledge as a foundation and build on it with new things that you learn making it unique to you.
Similarities
Both are learning or educational theories that attempt to explain behavior, external actions can be evaluated and they observe the responses idividuals have in different situations.
Cognitivism is similar to behaviorism because they both focus on
environments
. Cognitivism is a theory that students are able to learn more effectively when concepts are presented in a clear way, which involves
the learning environment to be organized
. Behaviorism focuses on actions being based on the consequences, which are directly
related to the environment the learner is in
.
