pt experiencing acute
bleeding
picking their nose
allergies,
environmental irritants
causes:
digital manipulation
idiopathic
Symptoms:
Anterior:
oozing blood
bright red blood
Posterior:
Profuse bleeding
Dark red blood
gagging
coughing
vomitting
Treatment
Intraoral vs. Extraoral
Intraoral:
Apply pressure to the area w/
gauze
evaluate after
2-3mins of pressure
if bleeding continues..
-suture
-use hemostatic agents
Extraoral:
apply pressure
re-evaluate clotting
-consider
tourniquet or suture
stabled: family member
can pick up pt
unstable: EMS
Prevention of Epistaxis
keep head elevated for 4hrs
-avoid heavy lifting
-drink water
do not blow the nose for several
hours
-lubricating cream in nostril 1-3x a day
