INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
-
Fuels and Combustion
- fuel - combustible substance, which on combustion produces a large amount of heat, which can be used for various domestic and industrial purposes.
- combustion - involves oxidation of carbon, hydrogen etc. of the fuels to CO2, H2O, and the difference in the energy of reactants and the products are liberated as large amount of heat energy which is utilized.
fuel + O2 → products + heat
- primary or main source of fuels >> coal and petroleum oils >> stored fuels available in earth's crust and are generally called "fossil fuels".
