Permaculture design:
81 Oakfield Road
Dan Burwood Draf1 1 1/23
Design aims
That the site be an inspiring and successful
example of well implemented permaculture design,
potentially inspiring better land use design
amongst neighbours
Demonstrably and explicitly
exemplifying P principles
That meaningful and various yields are produced
Pleasure:
leisure
social spaces
kung fu area?
Increase in biodiversity
Demonstration value
Food - towards 30 plant based
foodstuffs / week for family
Tree / soft fruit
perennial veg
some annuals
(defer annuals / interact with allotment)
That it be low-maintenance and look good
That it is useful, inspiring and
educational for all
stakeholders -
young kids, Dima, myself, visitors
Sequester carbon / reduce domestic 'footprint'
Issues to be
addressed
Dima:
Lawn unhealthy,
sparse, patchy, 'weedy'
2.Compost inefficient - lots of build up,
no interim place to empty
she doesn't feel she can take it on/
learn - system obscure / inscrutable
Scrappy edge to N. bed
in mid section - make clear bed/ edge to keep kids clear
Bottom section of garden not accessible / useful
for her and kids
overgrown ivy and vine on top / terrace section
Dan
Pile up of back door cardboard
access / door placement for terrace area
Ash trees - shade, ground moisture, size
General tidiness / utility of bottom area
placement of lower beds / greenhouse - poor access / sunlight
inefficient use sharing of top terrace
Possible interventions: in approximate order of intervention magnitude top to bottom
And urgency left to right
Cut / coppice ash trees?
Redesign composting - more woodchip / brown
interact with further composting at allotment
woodchip in kitchen
interim bucket outside back door
Capital letters use compost in garden to improve soil health and yields
Rerrange hedge / fence between mid and lower areas
prune lower branch/es of Pink lady to improve access
remove beds/ wooden edges of unproductive beds by greenhouse
move greenhouse / change orientation / dig up / pot on tiny apple behind it
Re seed / species diversify lawn /
consider new path pattern to break up unproductive lawn area. Perennial green manure red clover for example inter-planted with more diverse grasses and herbs
Train / clean prune vine to open bed below - replant with non strawberries - shade tolerant salads, add compost
Alkanet - chop and drop / bee area down bottom / dispklace with comfrey / borage / other candidates?
Re-line pond
Prune overhanging lime branches consider possible pergola I really like the lime trees down there and I eat the leaves and use the flowers so cutting them would make them inaccessible.
New forest garden border with clear edge and lots of compost
New kids area under cherry?
Remove south facing fences and replace with living screen vines creepers beans to improve Sun sector at bottom of garden. Possible work with neighbours to plant cultivate maintain the neglected garden at number 83
Extend water rainwater harvesting system: overflow from current water but to others further down the garden ultimately into pond. Consider self watering mechanisms
trip to tip with bulky wood waste from bottom of garden, possible paved area using reclaimed slabs - Kung fu practice and bench for putting propagating maybe some kind of kids area as well at the bottom.
Implement no storage for things that aren't being used rule: particularly at top of garden social leisure patio area and bottom of garden potting compost storage random wood tools -
giveaway or recycle unused or unwanted resources
